The 24 rats that rode into space on the shuttle Challenger last April suffered dramatic reductions in the release of growth hormone in their pituitary glands, a finding that could signal a serious problem for astronauts, said researcher Wesley Hymer, a biochemist at Pennsylvania State University at State College, Pa. Another researcher reported last month that the same rats also lost bone and muscle strength.
