Former City Councilman Van Dask, 66

Eugene Van Dask, a former Fountain Valley city councilman who was appointed to fill a one-year vacancy on the council in 1981, died Wednesday of a heart attack. He was 66.
Van Dask filled the seat left vacant by the appointment of Roger Stanton to the Orange County Board of Supervisors in November, 1980. Van Dask did not run for reelection.
Before joining the council, Van Dask was a Rockwell International purchasing manager. He also served as chairman of the Fountain Valley Improvement Authority, which oversees civic center expenditures.
In 1969, Van Dask led a successful drive to recall former Fountain Valley Mayor Robert D. Schwerdtfeger and Councilmen Donald V. Fregeau and Joseph J. Courreges.
During his term on the council, he donated half of his monthly $272.50 paycheck to pay for a trip by the Fountain Valley High School Band to Washington, D.C., and the remainder to the city’s Girls Club.
Van Dask is survived by his wife, Arnell, and a daughter, Kristen.
