LONDON — The first opinion polls since Britain’s political party conference season show the opposition Labor Party increasing its lead over Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher’s ruling Conservatives.
In a Gallup poll in Thursday’s Daily Telegraph, Labor, with 38% support, lead the Tories by six points with the Liberal-Social Democratic alliance in third place with 28%.
A previous Gallup poll in late September put Labor, with 29.5% backing, just 0.5% ahead of the Conservatives.
A Marplan poll in Thursday’s Guardian newspaper gave Labor a two-point lead, although all three major parties were close.
