Killing of 5 Algerian Police by Rebels Told

ALGIERS, Algeria — Five Algerian policemen were killed in a clash with Islamic fundamentalist rebels near Algiers, national press reports said Thursday.
They said one officer and four noncommissioned officers were killed Monday when the extremists responded by opening fire after police ordered them to surrender.
The incident occurred after police surrounded the group’s hideout, near Blida, west of Algiers.
