Duke University researchers in Durham, N.C., announced they will try to determine whether exercise is critical to slowing the deterioration of the mind and body in elderly people. University doctors have begun recruiting 120 healthy men and women over 60 for a nine-month exercise study, considered the first of its kind. “We know that younger and middle-aged people can improve their level of functioning with exercise, but we don’t know if the same is true of the elderly,” a researcher said.
