Tenneco Inc. reported its $105-million operating income in the third quarter was a decline of 17%, compared to net income of $126 million for the same period of 1984. An extraordinary loss of $240 million reflected the effect of a write-off of substantially all of the company’s investments in the Great Plains coal gasification and Cathedral Bluffs shale-oil projects during the third quarter of 1985. The write-off resulted in Tenneco reporting a third-quarter loss of $135 million.
