Monsanto is closing some chemical product lines.

The St. Louis-based firm said the “less profitable” lines accounted for about $1 billion in annual sales. Effective Jan. 1, a new chemical unit will be formed from the company’s existing operations that market fibers, industrial chemicals, polymer and engineered products. The company said it would no longer make certain high-hazard products and would not transport as many hazardous raw materials, though it did not name the products.
