San Diego Volleyball : San Diego State Falls in Five Games

SAN DIEGO--San Diego State’s women’s volleyball team extended third-ranked Cal Poly San Luis Obispo to five games Friday night before losing, 8-15, 15-10, 15-5, 11-15, 15-3, in Pacific Coast Athletic Assn. action at Peterson Gym.
Lynn Kessler led Cal Poly (21-5, 8-2) with 20 kills. Pacing No. 17 San Diego State (21-15, 4-7) were Renee Packopf with 25 kills and three service aces, and Kris Morton with 14 kills and 10 blocks.
In other action involving local teams:
U.S. International 3, University of San Diego 0--The Gulls, led by freshmen Claudia Johnson and Erin Tomblin, won the battle of local West Coast Athletic Assn. teams, 15-6, 15-5, 15-7, at USD.
Johnson, a middle-blocker, led USIU (12-14, 4-4) with nine kills and three solo blocks. Tomblin, a setter, had 20 assists in 43 attempts.
Leading USD (2-20, 1-7) was outside hitter Gina Trapletti with seven kills.
UC San Diego 3, Cal State Dominguez Hills 2--The Tritons, ranked ninth among NCAA, Division III teams, rallied to beat Dominguez Hills, 10-15, 9-15, 15-11, 16-14, 15-2, at UCSD.
Jennifer Pettigrew had 13 kills and Janet Hughes added 12 for UCSD (26-16).
