Digital Equipment Corp. unveiled a new computer.

The Maynard, Mass., computer giant said the VAX 8650, priced at $475,000, replaces the VAX 8600 model as its most powerful computer. The new model is 44% more powerful than the 8600, which can be modified for $125,000 to equal the computing capacity of the latest machine, Digital said. It is intended to improve the company’s penetration of the office-automation and factory-automation markets, among others.
