700 Shops Destroyed in Calcutta Market Fire

CALCUTTA — Fire swept through the main market district in downtown Calcutta on Thursday, destroying at least 700 shops but causing no casualties, officials of this Indian city said.
The blaze broke out in a shop selling plastic products at about 1:30 a.m. and raged through the 105-year-old complex until midmorning, police and fire officials said.
City officials said that about 700 shops were gutted, but unofficial reports put the figure at more than 1,000.
