Hedgecock Embarks on New Career as Radio Show’s Host

SAN DIEGO — Embarking on a new career he described as “an extension of some of the things I was doing as mayor,” Roger Hedgecock will become a radio talk show host while he appeals his felony conviction.

Describing his program as San Diego’s “only platform to tell the untold stories, to get behind the news,” the former mayor predicted at a news conference that his midday show on radio station KSDO-AM, scheduled to begin Jan. 20, will be “provocative (and) very, very lively.”

Hedgecock resigned as mayor last week after being convicted of conspiracy and perjury stemming from campaign law violations. He faces a year in county custody if his conviction is upheld on appeal.

“It’s great to come out of the experience I have had and find out people still appreciate some of my qualities. . . . I’m delighted with the opportunity that KSDO has given me,” Hedgecock said.

Meanwhile, the San Diego City Council scheduled a Feb. 25 special election to select his successor. If no candidate wins more than 50% of the vote, a June 3 runoff will be held between the two top vote getters. The victor in the election, San Diego’s third mayoral race in three years, will serve the remainder of Hedgecock’s term, until December, 1988.
