Eating solid food for the first time in a month, former Los Angeles resident Jane Imler claimed victory in her fast to spur the opening of 50 new shelter spaces for homeless people in Santa Cruz. Imler, who had lived on juices and mineral water since Nov. 19, ate her victory meal at a ceremony to open a new county-sponsored shelter for the homeless. County officials authorized the shelter after several months of fruitless attempts to find a private group with enough liability insurance to do the job.
