The letter by Dave was an exercise in cruel deception. An American base in Pakistan would counter the threat from Soviet-occupied Afghanistan and the pro-Soviet India. India (where over half the population live near starvation, has developed nuclear weapons, never condemned the Soviet occupation of Afghanistan or the Vietnamese occupation of Cambodia), continues to occupy Kashmir, Bhutan, Sikkim, and helped to create the banana republic of Bangladesh from previous East Pakistan. I do not know of any country around the world that does not fear despise the Soviet Union other than India, Cuba and Bulgaria. If America is ever to be respected around the world again, then it must start by helping her friends to look out for our interests. Pakistan is a leader in the Muslim world; close relationship with her provides us with influence over 55 countries and over 1 billion Muslims.
