OAKLAND — California has more companies owned by blacks than any other state in the nation, a report by the Assn. of Bay Area Governments says.
Based on 1982 census figures, the report, released Tuesday, said California had 44,658 of the 340,000 black-owned firms in the nation. The highest concentration was in Los Angeles County, with 23,520. Cook County, Ill., was second, with 12,688. The City of Los Angeles, with 12,197, trailed only New York City, 17,350, among the nation’s municipalities.
Patricia Perry, census coordinator for the association, also noted that fewer than 1% of the black-owned firms nationwide grossed more than $1 million a year, while 47% grossed less than $5,000.
