Patient With Artificial Heart Awaits Transplant

HOUSTON — A patient at the Texas Heart Institute received an artificial mechanical heart nine days ago and is in stable condition awaiting a suitable human heart for transplant, hospital officials announced Tuesday.
The heart-assist device, manufactured by Thermedics Inc. of Massachusetts, was implanted Jan. 19 by a surgical team headed by Drs. Denton Cooley and O. Howard Frazier.
