The writings, radio shows and press conferences of Eleanor Roosevelt provided material for “Eleanor: In Her Own Words,” an hourlong special coming up Friday from 9 to 10 p.m. on KCET Channel 28.
Lee Remick portrays the former First Lady in the production, originally staged at the Mark Taper Forum’s Literary Cabaret. It is a co-production of KCET and Taper Media Enterprises.
Mrs. Roosevelt was the first First Lady to hold a news conference, and that’s where the program begins, as she talks on subjects ranging from cooking to her role as the President’s wife.
Director Mark Cullingham said that in doing the show, “what we sought was the sense of being in the company of this extraordinary woman for an hour.” Executive producer Julian Fowles noted that the centennial of Mrs. Roosevelt’s birth was recently observed along with the 40th anniversary of the United Nations, “in which she was passionately involved.”
“Eleanor,” which is closed captioned for the hearing impaired, will be shown again Feb. 19 at 9 p.m. on Channel 28.
