BELGRADE, Yugoslavia — Andrija Artukovic, the 86-year-old man accused of complicity in the deaths of 700,000 people during World War II, is healthy enough to stand trial, a justice official said today.
Artukovic, who had to be carried on a stretcher from the plane that brought him from Los Angeles, faces penalties ranging from five years in prison to death by firing squad if convicted, said Predrag Matovic, assistant federal secretary of justice. He declined to say when Artukovic’s trial would begin or how long it could last.
