Weekend police sobriety checkpoints netted 81 arrests of motorists suspected of driving under the influence of alcohol, Los Angeles police and California Highway Patrol officers reported. Between 9 p.m. Saturday and 3 a.m. Sunday, 1,738 cars were stopped on Vermont Avenue near 5th Street. Authorities said 150 drivers were given field sobriety tests; 72 failed and were arrested. On Friday night, nine drivers were arrested after failing sobriety tests at a checkpoint on Imperial Highway near Western Avenue.
