San Diego Section Soccer : Valhalla Upsets Mt. Carmel, 1-0

SAN DIEGO — Winger Scott Dennison headed in a goal four minutes into the second overtime period Tuesday to give Valhalla a 1-0 upset over No. 3 Mt. Carmel in the first round of the San Diego Section boys’ 3-A soccer playoffs at Mt. Carmel.
Dennison’s goal, his sixth of the season, came off a corner kick from Scott Hargrove.
Valhalla goalie Brad Leahy had 15 saves.
Valhalla (16-4-1) will play the winner of tonight’s Hilltop-Grossmont game next Wednesday. Mt. Carmel, the Palomar League champion, ended its season at 15-7-2.
In other action:
Carlsbad 2, Calvin Christian 1--Carlsbad left wing Scott Peterson scored a goal in the closing minutes of the game to give the Lancers a 2-1 win over Calvin Christian in a first round contest at Carlsbad.
The Lancers fired 26 shots on Calvin Christian goalie Jason Boer.
The Crusaders managed only five shots against Carlsbad’s defense. However, one of those shots--a free kick by halfback Fred Wilgenburg--tied the game early in the second half.
Carlsbad first went ahead late in the first half on a goal by Andre Walker. Mauro Castro got the assist on both Lancer goals.
San Marcos 2, Castle Park 1--San Marcos eliminated Castle Park in 2-A boys’ action.
