The driver of a school bus that crashed into the rear of a stalled dairy truck along Interstate 680 in Fremont, killing a student, nine months ago, was sentenced to three years’ probation and fined $850 after pleading no contest to manslaughter. Mark E. Collins, who could have been fined $1,000 and given a year in jail, also was ordered to pay $50 to the state’s victim compensation fund. Dozens of Elk Grove students on their way to the Great America amusement park were injured in the accident. A California Highway Patrol report said Collins did not see the stalled truck because he was looking at his directions.
