The newlywed wife of a Navy lieutenant was killed Wednesday evening when she was thrown from her car after swerving to avoid hitting a dog on Interstate 5 north of Oceanside, the California Highway Patrol said.
Yukino Staples, 23, of Japan was driving behind her husband, Mark, who was in another vehicle, about 7 p.m. when both swerved to avoid hitting a dog on the freeway south of Las Pulgas Road, CHP spokesman Dave Hollenbeck said.
Staples lost control of her car, which overturned twice and came to rest 30 yards from the edge of the road. She apparently was not wearing a seat belt and was hurled 63 feet from her car, Hollenbeck said. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
