Wet and Windy Storm Rolls Across State

Times Staff Writer

A gusty storm rolled across California on Saturday afternoon, and forecasters said it could dump as much as an inch of rain on San Diego by the time it moves on Monday.

Heavy rains, rough surf and thundershowers, accompanied by winds of up to 40 m.p.h. and hail in some areas, are expected through tonight.

The National Weather Service said high-surf and travelers’ advisories will be in effect through today. Waves from 6 to 10 feet with occasional 16-foot breakers are expected at west-facing beaches.

Heavy snowfall at times and strong gusty winds are expected in San Diego mountains. Daytime temperatures in the coastal and inland areas today will be about 60 degrees. Nighttime lows at the coast are expected to drop to 47 with inland lows about 39.

A flash-flood watch was declared for areas of Ventura and Santa Barbara counties scorched in last year’s brush fires. Flood watches were also issued throughout Northern California, although no major problems were reported.

Temperatures Saturday at Lindbergh Field ranged from 51 to 61 degrees.

Strong winds and heavy snow cut visibility to almost zero in parts of the Sierra Nevada. As much as three feet of snow was predicted by Sunday in some areas, with snow levels ranging from a low of 2,000 feet in Northern California, 2,500 feet in central areas and 4,500 feet in San Diego County.
