Fountain Valley : Tennis Center Decision Due Within a Week

The City Council will select within a week a private concessionaire to operate the Fountain Valley Tennis Center, according to Ray Kromer, assistant city manager.
Kromer said leasing the 12-court center on Brookhurst Street will relieve the city of maintenance costs as well as increase the services offered to tennis players. “An outside concessionaire will do a better job promoting and utilizing the courts,” he said.
The terms of the contract are still being negotiated with the two companies that submitted bids. Kromer said his staff wants the concessionaire to offer services at the center that include a small pro shop, courts for lessons, courts for tournaments and walk-on courts for the public at rates that are close to what the city charges.
The city charges $1.50 an hour per court from 8 a.m. to noon and $3 an hour for evenings and weekends. A limited number of courts are available free of charge during weekday afternoons.
William Palmer, a city recreation supervisor, said the city now breaks even on the center, which costs $42,000 a year to operate.
