A 23-year-old man was stabbed during a bar fight that began after another man “made advances” to the victim’s girlfriend, police reported.
Jubentino Lizarrago Mendoza of Placentia was stabbed several times in the chest and once in the heart outside Zavala’s Bar on Santa Fe Avenue Sunday night, according to Police Lt. Daryll Thomann. Mendoza was taken to UCI Medical Center and was in stable condition in the intensive care unit, a hospital spokesman said Monday.
“Witnesses said the suspect made advances and comments towards (Mendoza’s) girlfriend,” Thomann said. “The two men scuffled inside, then continued the fight outside. A few seconds later, the victim staggered back into the bar, then stumbled back outside and fell on the sidewalk.”
Thomann described the assailant, who fled the scene, as someone “Mendoza might have known as a person who spent time at that bar.”
