The chief prosecutor of 26 men in the assassination of opposition leader Benigno S. Aquino Jr. urged the Philippine Supreme Court to declare a mistrial, charging that deposed President Ferdinand E. Marcos acted to “whitewash the case” against his former military chief, Gen. Fabian C. Ver, and 24 other soldiers. In a memorandum filed with the court by attorney Manuel Herrera, Marcos is quoted as telling judges and prosecutors, “Thank you for your cooperation; I know how to reciprocate,” after summoning them to the presidential palace three weeks before the trial began in February, 1985.
