White House Says Calls, Telegrams Generally Back Raid

WASHINGTON — The White House said Tuesday it has received 5,836 telephone calls, most of them supportive, in reaction to President Reagan’s decision to order U.S. bombing of Libyan targets in reprisal for acts of terrorism.
White House spokesman Larry Speakes said 4,672 calls supported the attack on Libya and 1,164 opposed it.
Speakes also said that 2,030 telegrams and mailgrams were received supporting the President’s decision, while 635 opposed it.
