11 Sentenced in Seoul for U.S. Office Sit-in

A court Tuesday sentenced 11 students to jail terms ranging from 18 months to three years for occupying the U.S. Chamber of Commerce office in Seoul and taking three hostages last November, court officials said.

They said the court gave suspended sentences to four other students because they repented of anti-government activities.

During the two-hour occupation, the students demanded the resignation of President Chun Doo Hwan and an end to what they called South Korea’s economic subjugation by the United States. Police freed the hostages after overpowering the protesters.
