Reaction to U.S. Bombing Raid on Libya
Senate Majority Leader Bob Dole (R-Kan.) said of the air strike against Libya that “the President did what the American people would have wanted him to do.”
Well, count me out! I am horrified and abashed. The Soviets are not alone in dubbing us “state terrorists.” How gross to use such enormous might against so minor a country! How uncivilized to ignore the United Nations and the opinions of all other countries!
This action obviously will boomerang against whatever targets, civilian or military, here or abroad, where some Americans can be targeted. Outraged Libyans and presumably their allies too will be eager to garner glory in the next world, if not in this, by what they consider self-sacrifice, and what we call terrorism.
Perhaps in a few weeks many who now go along with the President’s ill-conceived overreaction will feel as embarrassed about it as they now do about our big victory over tiny Grenada.
