Two San Diego men suspected of hiring a third man in a foiled attempt to kill a wealthy East San Diego salesman were arrested Friday morning in a restaurant parking lot, a police spokesman said.
Mihail Pantazis, 43, a self-employed carpenter, and Edward Gerard Giamberdine, also 43, a music composer, were being held Friday night in County Jail downtown on suspicion of solicitation to commit murder and conspiracy to commit murder, San Diego police spokesman Bill Robinson said.
The names of the alleged victim and the supposed killer, an FBI informer, were not released.
Robinson said police learned of the plan Wednesday night from the FBI.
The intended victim’s money apparently was the motive, Robinson said, adding that the money to pay the hired gun was to have come from the man’s wealth.
Robinson said Pantazis and Giamberdine allegedly supplied the informer with a .32-caliber gun and a knife to be used in the killing.
Bail for both men was set at $25,000 each, Robinson said.
