WASHINGTON — The federal budget deficit surged to $30.14 billion last month as a big pick-up in tax refund payments reduced overall tax collections, the Treasury Department said today.
The department said the March deficit was 23% higher than the February imbalance. For the first six months of the fiscal year, which began Oct. 1, the government has run up a deficit of $136.34 billion, 4.9% ahead of the record pace set last year.
