Shoup Misses Out on Vacation Extension as Cal Lutheran Golf Team Loses Final

Bob Shoup can take his time coming home from Europe. His next trip has been abruptly canceled.
So was the rest of his sports season Monday when Point Loma Nazarene defeated Cal Lutheran, 1,209-1,219, in the National Assn. of Intercollegiate Athletics District 3 championship at Camarillo Springs Golf Course.
Shoup, golf coach at Cal Lutheran, had planned on hopping right back on a plane after a six-week vacation overseas to take his team to the NAIA tournament in Montgomery, Ala., in June.
First, the Kingsmen had to get past Point Loma, but Shoup was confident enough that would happen to take off on a trip he and his wife had planned for nine years. Cal Lutheran’s chances, however, were severely damaged when senior Gary Davis, the school’s top golfer, broke his left ankle last week and missed the district finals.
According to Robert Doering, Cal Lutheran athletic director, Shoup, the school’s golf coach for 11 years and its football coach for 24 years, left for Europe without permission from the administration.
