MIKLOS ROZSA: “SPELLBOUND” CONCERTO; “NEW ENGLAND” CONCERTO; OVERTURES FROM “THE WORLD, “THE FLESH AND THE DEVIL” AND “BECAUSE OF HIM.” Utah Symphony Orchestra, Elmer Bernstein, conductor; Joshua Pierce and Dorothy Jonas, duo-pianos. Varese Sarabande Digital 704-260. Good film music does not necessarily make good concert music. Here are some of the richest film works ever composed. Huge washes of orchestral color splash before the listener, with fresh tunes and themes continually emerging to sustain one’s interest. All the pieces appear to be part of one long parade. Yet they lack that sense of design, that quality of growing to a conclusion, which mark unique musical creations. Shorn from the screen, Rozsa’s works are like brushstrokes of paint scraped from an artist’s canvas: They have color, but they cannot seize and rivet one’s attention.
