The father of honor student Melissa Martinez expressed gratitude for Los Angeles Roman Catholic Archbishop Roger Mahony’s intercession in behalf of his daughter, who had been barred from attending graduation ceremonies at Mary Star of the Sea High School in San Pedro because she is pregnant and unmarried. “She’s very grateful she’s going to be allowed to graduate,” Joseph Martinez said. About 200 youngsters took part in a class boycott supporting the right of their 17-year-old classmate to attend the event before Mahony ordered the school’s principal and pastor to change their ruling.
