Hold Stays on Marcos Property

SAN FRANCISCO — A federal appeals court today refused to require the U.S. Customs Service to return the cash, jewelry and other property seized when the ousted Philippines President Ferdinand Marcos arrived in Hawaii last February.

The U.S. 9th Circuit Court of Appeals here put on hold a Hawaii judge’s order, issued earlier this month, that required customs officers to return Marcos’ property. Customs agents seized the property after the government of Corazon Aquino claimed that the property belonged to the Philippines and not Marcos. Customs officials promised that the U.S. government would keep the property until the dispute had been settled.
