GTE-United Phone Merger OKd

WASHINGTON — The Justice Department announced today that it will approve a proposed merger of long-distance telephone operations and data communications services of GTE Corp. and United Telecommunications Inc.
On Jan. 16, GTE and United Telecommunications agreed to form a partnership called US Sprint, consisting of their long-distance telephone units, GTE Sprint and US Telecom, and their data communications subsidiaries. Both GTE and United have been losing money on their long-distance units.
