The newly recommissioned battleship Missouri rescued three boaters from a crippled vessel before arriving at its future home port of San Francisco to help the city celebrate Independence Day. The Missouri was heading toward San Francisco Bay when it spotted the disabled Valerie M., about 10 miles southeast of the Farallon Islands at about 8 a.m. The battleship immediately launched a 26-foot motor whale boat to rescue the crew. Not everyone was happy to see the battleship, however. Police arrested some 150 protesters for blocking traffic on a waterfront street while the refurbished World War II battlewagon arrived.
