Pasadena : Hotel Tower May Be Razed

Razing the central tower of the landmark Huntington Sheraton and replacing it with a replica is one of three possibilities for the site submitted this week to Pasadena officials. Huntington Hotel Associates, a partnership currently in escrow on the property, submitted an environmental impact report Tuesday detailing alternatives for the 79-year-old structure, which was closed late last year after a seismic study determined that the building could not withstand a major earthquake.

Huntington Hotel Associates is buying the hotel from Keikyu U.S.A. Inc., a Japanese conglomerate. Razing the central tower is the preferred alternative of the partnership. The other two options are to gut the hotel’s interior, and to refurbish the interior while leaving the inside intact. The Planning Commission is scheduled to review the report at its July 23 meeting.
