Southern, Hawkes Will Meet in Outdoor Racquetball Finals

Dan Southern, the top seed and defending champion, advanced to the finals of the 13th Ektelon National Outdoor Racquetball championships Saturday afternoon at Orange Coast College.
Southern, a resident of Huntington Beach, defeated Russell Robinson, 21-14, 21-14, in the quarterfinals and beat Ed Andrews, 21-19, 17-21, 11-9, in the semifinals.
Southern faces his doubles partner, Brian Hawkes, who has won the tournament four times (1981-84), in the finals at 2:15 today. Hawkes, the second seed, advanced with victories over Greg McDonald, 21-12, 21-8, and Kevin Booth, 21-6, 21-14.
In the women’s division, Martha McDonald, the top seed, breezed into the 1:15 p.m. finals with a victory over Marci Drexler, 21-6, 21-10. Lynn Adams, the second seed, defeated Sherry Knecht, 21-4, 21-12.
Results in the men’s B singles division:
John Urias defeated Joe Perez, 17-21, 21-16, 11-5; John Maciel defeated Travis Turner, 21-17, 21-12; Dave Genevay defeated Fredie Saucedo, 21-10, 21-5, and Charlie Hernandez defeated Bruce Penman, 15-21, 21-17, 11-10.
In the men’s C singles division:
Tom Draper defeated Geroge Barrera, 21-11, 21-19; Brad Quartucy defeated Joe Mears, 17-21, 21-12, 11-8; Brian Robitaille defeated Jim Pijllo, 21-19, 21-20, and Rick Sandello defeated Ravi Sohoni, 21-9, 21-9.
