Cherry Canyon Purchase Proceeding

The La Canada Flintridge City Council authorized its staff Monday to open escrow on Cherry Canyon Phase II, a 40-acre plot of wilderness that the city plans to acquire with help from funds that Gov. George Deukmejian recently approved in the state’s 1986-87 budget.
USC, which owns Cherry Canyon Phase II, has agreed to sell it to La Canada Flintridge for $716,000. To buy the land, the city will receive $337,000 from state environmental license plate funds, use $200,000 left over from an earlier parklands grant and contribute $179,000 from its reserves.
The 40-acre plot lies sandwiched between Descanso Gardens and a 55-acre park site called Cherry Canyon Phase I that the city acquired last year with help from a $1.3-million state grant.
City officials hope to close escrow on Cherry Canyon Phase II by Oct. 1, said Don Otterman, city manager.
