Tyson Breaks Boyd’s Nose in First, Then Scores a Knockout in Second

SWAN LAKE, N.Y. — Undefeated Mike Tyson broke Lorenzo Boyd’s nose in the first round and then scored a knockout at 1:43 of the second round of their heavyweight bout at the Stevensville Country Club Friday night.

It was the 22nd knockout for Tyson (24-0), ranked No. 2 by the World Boxing Council.

“I saw the opening and I heard my trainer yell, ‘Right now.’ And then I let it go,” Tyson said of the knockout punch, a clean right uppercut to the chin.

Tyson weighed in at 219, his heaviest for a professional fight. He battered Boyd with body punches from the opening bell and never let his opponent mount an attack.

Boyd, 198, did not attend a news conference after the fight. His trainer, Bo Williford, said the Cushing, Okla., fighter suffered a broken nose in the first round and was being treated by doctors. Boyd’s record slipped to 16-6

“I knew I couldn’t go right out headhunting,” said Tyson, 20 of Catskill, N.Y. “I hurt my (left) hand in an eariler fight, so I placed the punches to the body. I saw he was hurting and I caught him.”

Tyson next meets Marvis Frazier in a nationally televised fight at Glens Falls, N.Y., on July 26.
