The five players who form the Empire Brass play Bach with a smile: their sound shines, their tempos bustle, their timing is precise, and their notes hit the target. They do not, however, always give the sober thought and deep feeling for which some of these pieces ask (such as the chorale ‘In Dulce Jubilo’). Their performances are the perfect accompaniment for a garden party, less fit for a quiet listening.
