The controversial car-pool lanes on the Costa Mesa Freeway were in the news again with the admission by Caltrans officials that the accident rates might have been badly miscalculated.
Responding to allegations by the Orange County Transportation Commission that the traffic volume data used to compute accident rates have not been updated since 1982, a Caltrans official said that an independent study “might be the prudent thing to do.”
The accident rate for the first three months of 1986 may be up 30% over last year’s rate, Caltrans officials acknowledged.
The county commission overseeing the California Department of Transportation experiment will try to negotiate a study contract with the the Institute for Transportation Study at UCI for under $10,000, requesting a six-month progress report.
