Culver City : Development of Park Rejected

A plan that might have led to private development of William S. Hart Park in West Hollywood was unanimously rejected by the Los Angeles Recreation and Parks Commission at a hearing last Friday.
The decision was made after a two-week postponement during which the commissioners said they would “walk the park” and investigate the proposal to build a three-level underground garage there.
The London-based St. James Club had proposed construction of the garage to serve the historic Sunset Plaza apartments, which the club is renovating. The proposal was opposed by the West Hollywood City Council, the Sierra Club and residents.
The Sierra Club has suggested that the commission improve the run-down park by using the trust fund of $220,000 donated to the city of Los Angeles by the legendary Hollywood cowboy William S. Hart. The .83-acre park at 8341 De Longpre Ave., a block off Sunset Boulevard, is maintained by the Los Angeles City Recreation and Parks Department even though it is within West Hollywood’s boundary.
