There’s more than meets the eye behind the acquisition of “Memoirs of an Invisible Man.” As Outtakes reported last week, Warner Bros. paid beaucoup bucks (actually $1.35 million, not $1.45 million as we had it) for the movie rights to the first novel by Harry Saint.
Now more: The book was only three-quarters done when a William Morris agent found the property and rushed it to client Chevy Chase. Chase loved it and the agent urged WB to buy it for him. The studio did.
And three weeks later Chase left William Morris for archrival Creative Artists. The folks at William Morris, who do not represent the book, are shaking their heads. “It’s amazing, “ said one frustrated Morris man. “We created the situation and he (Chase) ends up leaving us. It’s a tough business.”
