Antarctic Wind Brings Snow, Sleet to Southeast Australia

SYDNEY — An Antarctic wind swept through southeastern Australia on Friday, blanketing roads and bridges with snow and turning the Tasmanian capital of Hobart into a “giant freezer,” a Weather Bureau official said.
Hobart airport was closed after the snow, which the official described as the heaviest in the island state since 1951. The temperature dropped to 33 degrees in the city.
