Authorities in Austria confiscated U.S.-made computers believed headed for the Soviet Union. U.S. Customs officials have begun an investigation into the attempted diversion of the computers, bought in West Germany. U.S. sources, who questioned why West Germany granted an export license for the computers, have described the seizure as the “tip of the iceberg” of a network funneling sensitive equipment to Soviet Bloc countries. The computers, built under license by a West German subsidiary of Tektronix Inc., in Beaverton, Ore., were seized at the Vienna airport.
