Fistfights broke out and a security fence was torn down in a brief scuffle at the First Annual Beach Scene Festival at San Pedro’s Cabrillo Beach. Los Angeles Police Sgt. John Hanna said there were “just too many people” going through a small gate in the fence and “the funnel broke” at about 5 p.m., when the festival, which had drawn an estimated 70,000 people, was beginning to wind down. “A few punches were thrown,” Hanna said, but officers controlled the outburst with only one arrest for interference with a police officer. No major injuries were reported, although paramedics said they treated several people for cuts and bruises.
