SAN DIEGO — Each of the top eight seeds were winners in first-round singles matches as the USTA Boys 12 National Tennis Tournament got under way Monday at Balboa Park’s Morley Field.
Like most of the top seeds, No. 1-seeded Vincent Spadea (Boca Raton, Fla.) had little trouble with his first-round opponent. Spadea defeated David Ament (Falmouth, Mass.), 6-0, 6-0. Seventh-seed Chris Devore (Decatur, Ill.) didn’t have as easy a time winning. Jordan Murray (Hewlitt, N.Y.) took Devore into a tiebreaker before losing, 6-3, 1-6, 7-6 (7-1).
The only upset of the first round was by Eddie Weiss (Fountain Valley), who defeated Michael Mather (Louisville, Ky.), 6-7, 6-4, 6-0. Mather is seeded in the second eight (9 through 16) alphabetically.
San Diego’s lone representative, unseeded Jerry Miyamoto of Del Cerro, advanced with a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Reed Cordish (Baltimore). Miyamoto’s opponent will be fifth seed Jeffrey Giraldo (Grosse Point, Mich.), a 6-2, 6-1 winner over Paul Ruediger (Duncanville, Tex.).
Today’s schedule: 7:45 a.m. first-round consolation singles; 10:30 a.m. second-round singles; 1:30 p.m. first-round doubles.
