The 4th District Court of Appeal ruled in favor of both sides in a television cameraman’s suit against a San Diego police officer who arrested him for ignoring orders to leave the site of an airline crash. While ruling that Officer Fred Edwards was within his rights to arrest cameraman Steven Leiserson at the site of the PSA crash in 1978, the court set new guidelines giving news media considerable leeway to report on disasters and asserting that state law is designed to preserve the public’s right to know about major news events.
