Bruce W. Vorhauer, inventor of the Today contraceptive sponge, stepped down as chairman of VLI Inc., the company he founded a decade ago.
Vorhauer, who has been easing himself out of the daily operations of the Irvine-based company, said he will continue to work as a consultant with VLI’s research and development staff. He will also remain a director.
His position will remain vacant, said Robert A. Elliott, president and chief executive. Elliott said he will act as chairman at board and shareholder meetings.
“It made sense now, because of other business interests I have, to formalize what has already happened in practice,” Vorhauer said in a telephone interview from VLI’s research laboratories in Missoula, Mont. “The day-to-day operation is not my forte. I tend toward inventing, building things.”
